Book of the Month: Outdoor Life Book Club (1992)

"…all the library [you] need to harvest and enjoy wild mushrooms for the table."
--MUSHROOM, The Journal of Wild Mushrooming

With amateur mushroom hunters especially in mind, Alan Bessette and I have prepared Edible Wild Mushrooms of North America: A Field-to-kitchen Guide. This field guide, which was subjected to the scrutiny of the university press peer-review process, presents more than 100 species of the most delicious mushrooms, along with detailed information on how to find, gather, store, and prepare them for the table.

This is the ONLY book for North America specifically designed to enable the novice to safely find, collect, cook and enjoy edible wild mushrooms!

A large majority of the edible mushrooms included can be found in most U.S. states and bordering Canadian provinces. Each species is described in detailed, non-technical language, accompanied by a list of key identifying characteristics that reliably rule out all but the target species. Superb color photographs also aid in identification. Poisonous "look-alikes" are described and illustrated.

With this wealth of information novice hunters will be able to identify edible mushrooms quickly and confidently, while experienced mycologists may discover new species for their hunting and eating enjoyment. More than 70 savory recipes, ranging from soups to salads to casseroles, canapes, quiches, and even a dessert are included.

OR Take a peek inside the book!

Read what experienced mushroomers say about Edible Wild Mushrooms of North America

"The publication is of excellent quality and print, well edited, authoritative, and provides an excellent introduction to edible and poisonous wild mushrooms." --Mycologia

"This is not simply another mushroom field guide… People hesitant in mycophagy [mushroom gathering and eating] will find confidence in their abilities by using this book… it should become the most popular field guide on the market—a fixture in everyone's basket." --Mycologist Barry L. Wulff, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus of Biology, Eastern Connecticut State University

"This is an especially helpful book for new members of our mushroom clubs… For our intermediate members, it is a tool to increase the number of edible species they know and to expand their knowledge on techniques for using edible mushrooms… The photos are clear and the description of each species includes a discussion of edibility and cooking and storing suggestions… This book will enable you to enjoy a great variety of edible wild mushrooms." --Sandy Sheine, Past President, Connecticut-Westchester Mycological Association

"It is a gorgeous book. The photography, layout and printing are all excellent, and the information is authoritative. I highly recommend it to pot-hunters everywhere." --James Worrall, Ph.D., Mycologist, U.S.D.A. Forest Service, Colorado

And read what NOVICE mushroomers say about Edible Wild Mushrooms of North America

"Edible Wild Mushrooms of North America has been very helpful and I feel very confident with 14 edible species at this point, including 60 pounds of golden chanterelles and many, many black trumpets. I have also learned to identify Morels; Dryad's Saddle; Sulphur Shelf; Pear-shaped and Gem-studded Puffballs; Lobster Mushroom; Sweet Tooth. I have also identified several poisonous species, obviously equally as important."

"This book has wonderful photos and often shows the mushrooms at various stages, angles and such. It's made it possible to recognize what I have been seeing for last few years. On another note the author has been wonderful prior to my even buying his book. I had sent him photos and he took the time to identify all that he safely could. If you are an amateur and want to learn, purchase this book."

"Lovely photographs, excellent identity descriptions, tons of useful information and I love the recipes -- plan to make every one of them."

"This is a concise, easy-to-use book for people just starting to hunt for edible mushrooms. It concentrates extensively on the edibles and look-alike poisonous ones. By eliminating 1000s of other mushrooms it is great for identifying the finest edibles."

"For a "first" book on wild mushrooms I found this one to be very good. The pictures show the top, bottom, stems, colors and different parts of each mushroom. There are "warnings" on those that are edible but make some people sick, and the "no-no"s are equally shown and written about. We're just new at this, and for a "starter" book this was just the ticket."

"For those interested in preparing and eating the more common and easily-recognized species of edible mushrooms, this book is a must-have. In-depth species descriptions, including dangerous look-alikes, make positive identifications much easier."
